Interfaith Hospitality Networks (IHN) are unique partnerships of congregations and professionally staffed day centers that provide shelter, meals, and support services to homeless families in 146 networks in over 90 cities or counties in 39 states. Ohio networks include Interfaith Hospitality Networks in Lebanon, Xenia, Columbus and Cleveland.

The Interfaith Hospitality Network of Greater Cincinnati is unique in that it endeavors to unite all religious denominations (Protestant, Jewish, Catholic, etc.) in its efforts to assist homeless families. The Interfaith Hospitality Network of Greater Cincinnati illustrates the diversity of Interfaith Hospitality Network with support from all three of these denominations.

1986: The first Interfaith Hospitality Network began in 1986 in New Jersey.

1989: The national organization, Interfaith Hospitality Network, was formed in 1989 to share knowledge and experience among the Networks. Interfaith Hospitality Network (now known as Family Promise), the umbrella organization, operates out of Summit, New Jersey.

1991: Interfaith Hospitality Network of Greater Cincinnati opened its doors October 26, 1991, with eight hosting congregations.

1991-2009:  We have since grown to 28 hosting congregations representing Protestant, Catholic, Unitarian, Muslim and Jewish faiths, to become one of the largest providers for homeless families in the Cincinnati area. These “hosting congregations” are supported by over 64 “supporting” and 35 “funding” congregations, which contribute food, financial support and more than 1,000 volunteers. We have served 859 families since opening in 1991. ↑ Return to Top

Interfaith Hospitality Network works by combining the resources of religious congregations who provide, at the minimum, shelter and meals, and Interfaith Hospitality Network staff, who provide case management, information and referrals to help families obtain and retain housing. ↑ Return to Top

Interfaith Hospitality Network began in New Jersey, when founding National President decided to do something to help the homeless families she saw in New York City by convincing her church and other area congregations to provide them shelter and meals. Interfaith Hospitality Network GC came along five years later because a handful of representatives of local congregations-Protestant, Catholic and Jewish-recognized the value of this mission and implemented it. ↑ Return to Top

Currently, the average length of stay in the Network is around three to four weeks. ↑ Return to Top
